A company that specialises in custom mouthguards hired me to photograph four guys from the Australian Hockey Team wearing their mouthguards. The players were Jamie Dwyer, Mark Knowles, Kieran Govers and Glenn Turner.
Images had to portray strength and athleticism, and be shot horizontally. This meant they could be used as ‘banner’ images on their website. One way to achieve a ‘masculine’ look is by shooting on a black backdrop and using strong strip side lighting. This creates highlights on the edges of the body like arms, back, cheekbones and forehead, and also creates stronger shadows to one side of the nose, under the chin and arms.
